Main events in the history of this site

1400 - 1420Foundation - According to Ware, Askeaton friary was built by James Fitzgerald, Earl of Desmond in 1420. An earlier convent which was in existence in 1400 - Inysgebryny - has been identified as Askeaton (the Irish form of Askeaton being Inis Geibhtine). (CM, CPR).
This convent was probably founded by Gerald, 4th Earl of Desmond (FML, 170, 180 - 1)(Med. religious houses, Ire., 242)
1497 - The convent passed to the Observants in 1497 (CMT, 250). This is referred to as a reform under Provincial Patrick Hely in 1513, which may mean that a first reform was not fully successful. (AH6ii. 157) (Med. religious houses, Ire., 242)
1558Burial - James, 15th Earl of Desmond, was buried in Askeaton in 1558.
1564 - A provincial chapter was held at Askeaton in 1564.
1579 - 1581Dissolution - During the Desmond war, English soldiers under Nicholas Malby expelled the friars, killing some of them. (AH6i, 65). Westropp, in RSAI xxxiii gives the date of expulsion as 1579, while ALS gives 1581. (Med. religious houses, Ire., 242)
1579 - Two Franciscans, Patrick O'Hely, bishop of Mayo, and Conn O'Rourke were captured after landing in Askeaton, and were tortured and hanged in 1579 in Kilmallock. Their bodies were brought back to the convent of Askeaton, where they were buried with solemnity in 1647. (Westropp), (Medieval religious houses, Ire., 243)
1587 - Frs. John Cornelius and Walter Farrell were executed in 1587. (McN, 166), (CMT (4), 64 - 6)
1627 - There is a record of the friars being captured and killed in 1575 (probably mistaking the date)and of the friars returned in 1627. (AH6ii, 157) (Med. religious houses, Ire., 243)
